For the last 40 years,
Korea has made remarkable development in the fields of industry, economy,
politics, culture, and environment, having no parallel in the world history.
However, now the driving force for the development is gradually fading away and
Korea is faced with several socio-cultural and industrial economic limitations.
Such remarkable growth of Korea is on stagnation. Korea is standing on a new
turning point for its development.
The world is now in endless competition.
In order for Korea to have another takeoff toward a real advanced country
with the scientific technology in this world, it urgently needs to obtain
human resources of high quality through education,
which are only the natural resources of Korea.
That is, qualitative takeoff through creative scientific technology is
the urgent national issue.

Therefore, the national development we can expect can be made only after
"scientific development through education" and
"educational development through science" become a basis.
That is why the social responsibilities and the expected roles of
Seoul National University's BK 21
(SENS: Science Education for the Next Society) are greater than ever.
Seoul National University is equipped with the conditions
for international competition in both fields of science and education.

Fortunately, we have a faculty with excellent research capabilities
in the field of science education who can build up with prominent universities
in the world.
And further, our students have high academic potential of a world level.
Only the problem is that such potential capabilities can't be displayed
to the full because scientific capacities have not been accumulated
and a supporting system for it has not been established yet
due to its short history.

It is a golden opportunity that our university's
SENS (Science Education for the Next Society) has been selected
for the second stage BK21 project.
We intend to operate the SENS based on the following objectives and visions:

| 1. |
As implied by our slogan, "Making SENS of the World!",
we aim to understand the world through science education
and to develop ourselves into a worldwide organization for science education.
|
|
|
|
| 2. |
We will jump to become the hub of science education in East Asia
from the short-term viewpoint, the best research institute
for science education in Asia from the mid-term viewpoint,
and one of three best research institutes for science education
in the world from the long-term viewpoint.
|
|
|
|
| 3. |
We will establish the prototype of science education for the next society
and develop it into the world standards for new science education.
For this, we will balance human structure between "science education"
and "highly advanced science" that we already have.
We will also develop the human resources' potential manifest to the full.

|
|
| 4. |
We will actively open new fields of science education
that the future society may need such as professionalism of science teachers,
science education by use of high-tech media,
highly advanced science education,
custom-made science education,
science and culture education, etc.
Through this, we will train young researchers and experts of a world level
who will lead this field.
